Best Courier for Fragile Items: Who Should You Choose?

By AGS Traders (UK) Ltd · Published · 6 min read

Fragile goods need careful packing and the right vehicle — not the cheapest label. Here’s how to protect delicate parcels.

Fragile deliveries fail for two reasons

Most damage comes from poor packing or too many handovers. A dedicated courier with fewer touchpoints usually protects glassware, electronics, artwork and instruments better than a multi-depot network. Get a courier quote or see Secure transport.

Think about the journey, not just the vehicle. A parcel that goes door to door in one van is handled twice; the same parcel through a hub network may be loaded and unloaded five or six times, with conveyor belts and cage trolleys in between.

Neither model is wrong — but for glass, ceramics, instruments or electronics, every extra touchpoint is another roll of the dice. Choosing a courier is partly choosing how many hands your item passes through.

What to tell the courier

Flag fragility clearly, share approximate value for insurance, and describe orientation requirements (“this way up”). If the item is high value, ask about enhanced security and signature on delivery.

Good couriers will also ask questions back: can the item lie flat, is it temperature-sensitive, does it need to stay dry? A driver who knows what they are carrying takes corners differently and packs the vehicle accordingly.

Agree the delivery handover too. Fragile items should not be left on doorsteps or with unspecified neighbours — insist on a named signature or photo POD at the intended address so the chain of care is complete.

  • Double-wall cartons and adequate void fill
  • Corner protectors for frames and screens
  • Label as fragile and keep photos of packing
  • Insure to a realistic replacement value

Packing that survives the real world

Assume the parcel will be tilted, stacked and carried up stairs. Double-boxing with cushioning between the layers, taping in an H-pattern, and keeping heavy items low in the box all dramatically improve survival odds.

Photograph the item and the packed box before collection. If a claim ever becomes necessary, those photos — plus the courier’s condition notes — turn a painful argument into a simple process.

Do not rely on “fragile” tape to do the job of packing. It is a useful signal, but the physics of foam, spacing and box strength is what actually arrives intact.

A quick word on insurance for fragile goods

Check that the courier’s cover applies to fragile categories, as some standard policies exclude glass or artwork unless declared. Declaring honestly costs a little more and buys a great deal of security.

Remember that insurance values the goods, not the delay or the disappointment. For irreplaceable items, the real protection is the combination of careful packing, minimal handling and a courier you trust.

How AGS Traders helps

Our drivers handle time-critical and delicate jobs with care, photo POD and insured transit. Mention fragility when you request a quote so we assign the right vehicle and handling notes.

For particularly delicate consignments — exhibition pieces, prototypes, medical equipment — we can arrange dedicated vehicles so your item travels alone, with no other freight pressing against it.

We will also flag your handling notes to the driver before collection, not on arrival. That small detail means straps, blankets and positioning are planned rather than improvised at your door.
